Are there different types
of dental bridges?

1

Traditional Bridge - A traditional bridge is most commonly 3 units long. We would prepare the teeth on the left and right of the missing tooth and place a bridge which would cover all 3 teeth.

2

Maryland Bridge - A Maryland bridge is the most conservative way to replace a missing tooth. With this type of bridge, the adjacent teeth do not need to be prepared. Instead we simply cement the artificial tooth onto the adjacent tooth with one or two wings. This is commonly used in the front of the tooth.

Cantilever Bridge - A cantilever bridge can also be used to replace a missing tooth, however instead of both adjacent teeth being prepared, only one adjacent tooth is prepared. This is perfect for non load bearing areas such as the middle or front of the mouth, and in a situations when we want to limit damage to adjacent teeth.

Should I replace my missing teeth?

missing teeth

Our team at Dazzling Smiles Dental Tarneit highly recommend that you replace missing teeth in your mouth. Whether they have been removed due to infection, fracture or gum disease, leaving gaps in your smile can lead to serious consequences.

Lost teeth compromise the natural balance of the mouth and this leads to increased stress and pressure on the remaining teeth.

Other problems you may notice when you lose teeth are:

  • Loss of bone near the lost tooth
  • Food trap where the tooth has been lost
  • Tilting of the adjacent teeth
  • Over eruption of the opposing teeth
  • Excessive wear and strain of the remaining teeth

If you have missing teeth, contact our friendly dentist in Tarneit so we can offer you solutions!

In general, a dental bridge can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years because they are cemented onto your teeth. This is what makes them a great solution for replacing missing teeth.
