teeth stained

Why are my teeth stained?

There are 2 main factors that lead to staining of teeth.

  • Extrinsic Staining
  • Intrinsic Staining

Extrinsic stains form on the outer layer of the tooth and usually form due to lifestyle habits such as smoking or drinking coloured substances such as red wine or black coffee.

On the other hand, intrinsic staining happens from inside the tooth and are often brought upon by factors such as medication, genetics or injury.

Whether it is extrinsic or intrinsic staining, if you are not happy with the color of your teeth, professional teeth whitening can be a great solution to brighten your smile.

What are the different types of teeth whitening?

There are two main types of whitening procedures

1. At home whitening - This process involves applying whitening gel onto your teeth with the use of whitening trays. At your first appointment, our dentists will make custom molds for your teeth which will be used to make the trays. At your second appointment you will pick up your custom trays along with the whitening gel. To achieve the best results, you should apply the gel for around 1 hour per day for approximately 2 weeks. This is a safe and effective way to brighten your smile in the comfort of your own home.

2. Professional In chair whitening - We recommend in chair whitening for those looking for immediate and long lasting results. Dazzling Smiles Dental uses the Philips Zoom Whitening system to achieve amazing results. With the use of specialized equipment and a strong whitening gel, we can brighten your smile in as little as 1 hour.

What happens during professional
in chair whitening?

01

Our dentists will take a picture of your baseline smile to capture the discolored teeth.

02

We use specialized equipment to protect your gums, lips and cheeks before applying a high concentration whitening gel onto your teeth.

03

We use a high strength UV light to activate the whitening gel applied onto your teeth. Over 4 sessions of 15 minutes (all completed during the same appointment) your teeth will become whiter and brighter.

04

After completing all sessions, we will take an ‘after' picture to capture your amazing white smile.

What should I do after Teeth whitening?

Sensitivity

1. Sensitivity - After a teeth whitening appointment, most of our patients have little to no sensitivity. This being said, everyone is different and it is completely normal to experience mild amounts of tooth sensitivity for 24 hours. Our team will supply you with a special sensitivity gel that you can apply to your teeth to lessen any pain

2. Diet - The most important rule after your whitening treatment is to watch your food and drink. To achieve the best results, you must not consume any coloured food or drink for a period of 48 hours. Some foods to avoid include:

  • Black tea and black coffee
  • Coloured fizzy drinks
  • Coloured curries
  • Coloured sauces
  • Smoothies with coloured berries

Are there any precautions before
teeth whitening?

We always recommend that before whitening your teeth, your mouth be in a healthy and stable condition. This will allow you to achieve the best results. There are 2 main factors to consider

Gum Health

1. Gum Health

Gum disease such as gingivitis or periodontitis should be under control. This may involve a full clean of your teeth and gums to remove any bacteria and tartar from your teeth.

Tooth Decay

2. Tooth Decay

Any cavities or defective fillings should be fixed before teeth whitening. This may involve having fillings done prior to your appointment. This will ensure there is no long term damage to the nerves of the teeth.
