What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is an artificial cap that is placed over your natural tooth. Dental crowns in Tarneit are designed to perfectly fit your tooth and can be used to strengthen weak teeth. Unlike fillings, dental crowns are bonded onto your teeth which means they are a fantastic long-term solution for both aesthetics and functionality.

What are the signs I need
a dental crown?

1

Root Canal Treated Teeth - Teeth that have been recently root canal treated are great candidates for crowns. This is because root canal-treated teeth are significantly weaker and can fracture easily. Having a crown done helps to provide strength, support and stability.

Discolored Teeth - Dental crowns are a great option if you want to hide stained or discolored teeth. Not only will it help to strengthen these teeth, but also improve their appearance by covering any imperfections.

Broken/Fractured Teeth or Tooth Wear - Teeth that are broken or worn can often be saved with dental crowns. Such teeth are prone to decay and damage so placing a crown helps to make them stronger and more stable. This is especially true for scenarios where simple fillings wont work.

What are the steps of getting a
dental crown?

It generally takes 2 appointments to have a dental crown made. Through these appointments, our highly trained team will make sure your experience is pain-free and comfortable.

Appointment 1

During the first appointment, our dentist in Tarneit will start by numbing up the area to be worked on. This will make sure the appointment is completely pain free.

After we are sure you are numb, the dentist will remove a thin layer from the outside of the tooth to make space for the fitting of the crown.

The prepared tooth is then digitally scanned or mold taken. This will then be sent to the lab for fabrication. In the interim, our team will place a temporary crown so you will still be able to eat and smile.

Appointment 2

After approximately 1 week the final crown would have been made and returned.

We will then remove the temporary crown so we can check the fit, color and size of the final crown. We want to make sure the color matches your natural smile and the dental crown fits into your bite.

Once we are happy we will permanently cement the dental crown onto your natural tooth allowing you to once again chew and smile with confidence.

How Long does a dental crown last?

Dental crowns are a great option if you are looking for a permanent long-term solution. Since dental crowns are cemented onto your natural tooth with very strong glue, they generally last anywhere between 10 to 15 years. To achieve a result like this, our Tarneit dental team always recommends having 6 monthly checks and cleans along with meticulous oral hygiene at home.

What are crowns made of?

There are several materials available to us when fabricating a dental crown. Depending on various factors such as the position of the tooth and bite, we may choose a specific material for you.

Metal Crowns

1. Metal Crowns

Metal Dental Crowns tend to be the strongest type of crown. The most common metal crown is gold. Although gold can be long-lasting, it is not usually not used for front teeth.

PFM Crowns

2. PFM Crowns

Porcelain fused to metal crowns have an inner layer of metal and an outer layer of white porcelain. This type of dental crown is a great solution when you need both a strong material and a white color.

Porcelain Crowns

3. Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain/Zirconia is one of the most common materials used for dental crowns. Although we don't have the same strength as metal, we have amazing colors that can perfectly match your smile. This a great option for those looking to makeover their smile.
